Women in Bangladesh

Shamali Shill Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Jagannath University.
Sabina Sharmin Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Jagannath University.

Abstract

This discussion aims to introduce the debate on equal property inheritance rights by women in Bangladesh, which arose in the context of the latest announced the National Women Development Policy 2011. There are disputes among general people as well as intellectuals on this issue based on different opinion and logic. The opinion which stands against equal inheritance property rights by women highlights the argument that attempts should not be taken to change the Muslim Family Laws since they are divine laws. On the other extreme, the view supporting equal property inheritance rights focuses on changing pattern of women status and women contribution to family and society and demands it as basic right for women. This analysis attempts to derive a critical discourse on this issue and make justification for equal property inheritance rights by women in Bangladesh.
